Working Memory Treatment- COGMED

Are you, or your child showing difficulty with focus and memory, reading comprehension, math, motivation, working hard, and expressing emotions effectively? Poor working memory may be a part of the cause.

Working memory allows individuals to keep information in mind and apply new information. The working aspect is the ability to combine what you know and new information and effectively express the information. Working memory skills impact the ability to remember information for a short time, complete tasks, recall multiple steps, and effectively demonstrate what someone knows, feels, thinks, and needs in verbal, written, or visual means

The Cogmed training method consists of 25 training sessions done online, each 30-45 minutes long (depending on working-level needs). Each session consists of a selection of various tasks that target the different aspects of working memory. The training is done online at home, in school, or at work. The standard program is five weeks long with five sessions every week. Then a break of three-four weeks, and a meeting to discuss outcomes, areas of growth, and how improvements are noted in areas of initial difficulty.

The training is always led by a Cogmed Qualified Coach who works with the user to provide structure, motivation, and feedback on the progress. Clients will be supported weekly throughout the program for best results.

Initial Interview – All Cogmed providers provide screening to determine suitable users. The likelihood of him/her benefiting from the training is evaluated.

Start-up session – The Cogmed Coach plans and structures the training.

Weekly coach calls – The trainee goes through the training either at home, at school, or at work to get advice on how to get the most out of the training, hear feedback, and increase motivation.

Access to the Cogmed Coaching Center – Both the trainee and the Cogmed Coach review and monitor the results of each day’s training, using our online system.

Wrap-up session – After the training is completed, the Cogmed Coach summarises the training together with the trainee and provides feedback data from rating scales and the Cogmed Coaching Center.

Six months follow-up interview – The Cogmed Coach documents training effects again, with more time elapsed and the effects fully emerged.

All About Play Therapy

Therapeutic play is an approach where toys are used like words and the play connects the words together, sharing an authentic experience without directly overwhelming the child.

Through play, children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behaviours, develop problem-solving skills, and become empowered while process through conflicts or disrupting events.

Play in the therapy room is an evidence-based approach bringing many benefits, some which include releasing the unresolved issues causing barriers on development and healthy functioning. Play creates a safe place to process with the support of the therapist-client relationship; the therapist can help teach emotional strategies, model regulation and guide the processing of events, all of which are essential for healing to occur.

The use of various modalities of Play provide a form of expression for any individual. Play Therapy creates a space were healing can take form and growth can be fostered in all ages. Play is not only for children but also for adults, and new research is showing the effectiveness of Play Therapy with the elderly. Individuals of trauma, cultural differences, whole families, and those with language barriers can all benefit from Play Therapy.

“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation” – Plato
